6pm-9pm West Virginia Jewish Film Festival “Jews in Shorts”
Enjoy short features related to Jewish Culture, Israel, and Jewish History. Films begin at 7pm with a hummus tasting and competition for Charleston’s best hummus beginning in the lobby at 6pm.
Life and Hummus (USA and Israel, 40 min.) A fascinating documentary of a Jewish American filmmaker as he travels through picturesque Israel and the West Bank in hopes of finding “the world’s best” hummus. His love for hummus and respect for the characters he meets shines throughout this short.
Chika, The Dog in the Ghetto (German, 17 min.) The heroic wartime tale of a Jewish boy and his dog, set in a Polish ghetto, told through amazing stop-action animation. Based on a children’s book by Holocaust survivor Bat-Sheva Dagan.
The Chop (British, 16 min.) Comedy about Yossi, a charismatic Kosher butcher in England who loses his job, cannot find work at other Kosher butchers, and therefore decides to pretend to be Muslim in order to get work at a Halal butchers.
Arrival (Hebrew, 10 min.) Notions of collective historic memory arise during an Israeli mother’s increasingly uneasy encounter with an elderly German woman on a Berlin-bound train.
Joe’s Violin (USA, 24 min.) A Polish survivor of the Holocaust drops off his 70-year old violin during a local instrument drive and it is acquired by a 12-year-old girl from the Bronx. The experience changes both of their lives.
Academy Award nominee for best documentary short subject this year.
